"Music is part of being human...but to those who suffer...it is a necessity, and may have a power beyond anything else to restore them to themselves, to restore them to health at least in the precious few minutes that it lasts."
-Oliver Sacks
What is Music therapy?
Music Therapy is the clinical use of music, rhythm and vibrations to treat a variety of medical conditions by licensed professionals
Using what we know about how our minds and bodies respond to music, music therapists are trained to use these elements to help address a patient's specific needs. Because everyone has a unique and personal connection to music, music therapy can be a viable treatment to meet various types of healthcare goals.
From an infant in the womb, to a patient's last breath, music has been clinically proven to be an intrinsic part of the human experience. From both ends of the spectrum of human life, to everything in-between, most individuals can benefit from music in one way or another. Music can affect us in so many ways: emotionally as a favorite song tugs at your heart strings, physically as our feet tap the beat to a song on the radio, cognitively as a song brings a fond memory to our recollection, physiologically as our very own heart and breathing rate follows a particular rhythm...As music therapists, we utilize these natural responses, including those previously mentioned, to create an experience for growth and change for our patients.
